The STMA Knights hosted the Magic from Monticello on Tuesday afternoon for staff appreciation night. This game felt like a playoff game from the opening pitch. Kolby Gartner started on the mound and pitched 7 1/3 innings. Gartner allowed two runs off six hits, and struck out thirteen Magic hitters. Austin Haus came in relief and pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless ball. Both pitchers did an outstanding job keeping the Knights within striking distance. STMA didn’t put a run across until the sixth inning. The Knights managed to get one run across in the bottom of the sixth off the bat of Luc Laylin. Boston Merila had a clutch hit in the seventh inning to tie the game up at 2-2. Haus shut down the Magic in the eighth, ninth, and tenth innings. The Knights had chances, but it wasn’t until the bottom of the tenth inning when they would put the winning run across the plate. In the tenth, Boston Merila led off the inning with a double. Cody Kelly came to the plate already with a single in the game and launched a 1-0 fastball deep in the gap in right center for a game winning RBI double for a 3-2 victory for STMA. Eric Fouquette and Jordan Krupke combined to go 5-8 on the day for the Knights. This was a complete team effort and great come from behind victory for the Knights. STMA improves 15-3 overall on the season and 11-1 in the Mississippi 8 Conference. The Knights play their last Mississippi 8 Conference game on Thursday as they travel to Rogers to take on the Royals. Thank you so much for our great STMA Staff for attending our game for staff appreciation night. Thank you for all that you do for these student-athletes!
