The boys cross country teams opened up their regular season by competing at the Monticello Invitational last Thursday, September 8th. In both the junior varsity and varsity races, the Knights saw some impressive individual efforts and improvements, which led to great team results. Complete results can be found online here.
In the first high school race of the day, the JV boys felt out the new 5k course at Bertram Chain of Lake Park. Competing against a tough Sartell team that finished first (15 points), the Knights placed 7 runners in the top 25 to accumulate a score of 61 to finish 2nd out of 13 schools. Individually the Knights were paced by senior Ethan Cornell (9th-19:13), Tommy Hamilton (11th-19:16), junior Joey Och (12th-19:16), and sophomore Tyler Bartholomew (14th-19:24).
In the final boys race of the day, a young varsity squad gained some invaluable experience on their way to finishing 4th out of 14 teams. Senior Alex Wolseth, sophomore Jonah Breuer, and sophomore Carter Knaus battled in the top chase pack throughout the race. When all was said and done after the two-lap race, all three finished in the top 12. With a strong finishing kick, Breuer finished 5th overall (17:24), followed closely by Wolseth (17:25), and Knaus (17:42). Also scoring for the Knights were Joey Herbst (49th) and Michael Youngberg (61st).
The Knights will continue their season Thursday, September 15th. The team will be split between races at Anoka High School (Rum River Invitational) and the St. Francis Invitational (Ponds Golf Course).
